Blast furnaces are the core of ironmaking, capable of turning fine iron ore into the essential pig iron with remarkable efficiency. Shanghai Metallurgy Equipment Group (SME Group) is renowned for its expertise in medium and small blast furnace projects. The company drives operational excellence through precision engineering, a strong commitment to cost-efficiency, and a dedication to environmental sustainability.

The Core of Ironmaking: The Blast Furnace

At the very heart of the ironmaking process lies the blast furnace, a crucial component capable of transforming fine iron ore and fluxes into crude iron, commonly known as pig iron. This conversion is a comprehensive engineering discipline encompassing critical components and processes such as sintering, charging, combustion, reduction, slag formation, and tapping systems. Each element is meticulously designed to work in harmony, ensuring the production of high-quality pig iron with remarkable efficiency.

Raw Material Requirements

To produce one ton of pig iron, the following raw materials are typically needed:

  • Iron Ore: 2 tons (1.8 metric tons)

  • Coke: 1 ton (0.9 metric tons)

  • Flux (Limestone): a half ton (0.45 metric tons)

Ensuring a continuous and sufficient supply of these materials is essential for uninterrupted blast furnace operation.

The Quality of the Raw Materials Matters

The quality of iron ore significantly impacts the efficiency and production capacity of a blast furnace. Superior iron ore improves the utilization coefficient of the furnace. The primary raw materials for blast furnace smelting include iron ore, fuel (coke), and flux (limestone).

Blast Furnace Operation

During operation, iron ore, coke, and limestone are loaded from the top of the furnace, while preheated air is blown into the tuyere at the furnace’s base. At high temperatures, coke burns with the oxygen from the air, producing carbon monoxide and hydrogen, which rise through the furnace and reduce the iron ore. The resulting molten iron is extracted from the iron hole, while impurities combine with limestone to form slag, which is discharged separately. The generated gas is cleaned and used as fuel for various heating applications.

Products of Blast Furnace Smelting

The main product of blast furnace smelting is pig iron, accompanied by by-products such as blast furnace slag and gas, which are utilized in various industrial processes.
