Project Planning for Short-Process Steel Plants

Short-process Steel Plant

A reliable energy supply (including water, electricity, and fuel) and sufficient land resources are the basic prerequisites for any steel plant project. Once these conditions are met, project owners must carefully plan the facility by defining its production capacity, raw materials, product types, and manufacturing processes.

SME specializes in the metallurgical industry, particularly in turnkey and EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) steelmaking projects. We have successfully built steel plants and production lines for a variety of steel products across dozens of countries. In addition to full project delivery, we also assist clients in selecting the most suitable production processes and equipment based on principles of economic efficiency, low cost, and high yield. If you are considering the installation of a short-process steel plant, please provide the following key data to facilitate project planning:

Turnkey Steelmaking Project

  1. Planned annual production capacity
  2. Type of raw material (e.g., scrap, DRI, others)
  3. Target steel grades
  4. Product specifications (e.g., section sizes, cut lengths)
  5. Product standards
  6. Incoming voltage to the plant
  7. Available land area

Turnkey Hot Rolling Project

  1. Planned annual production capacity
  2. Type and size of raw materials
  3. Product standards
  4. Product specifications
  5. Product mix
  6. Type of fuel used
  7. Available land area

For tube production lines, please specify the required wall thickness of the tubes. For strip or sheet lines, include the required single coil weight, as well as inner and outer coil diameters.

When determining these key parameters, special attention should be given to product specifications. For smaller-scale plants, it is often neither practical nor economical to produce a wide variety of product sizes. For example, a 50,000 TPA (tons per annum) rebar line is best optimized for producing Ø8–Ø12 mm rebars. We typically evaluate product mix and process design together to find the most efficient solution.

SME’s design team has extensive experience in planning new steel plants and upgrading existing facilities. If you are interested in developing a steel plant project, we welcome you to contact us for professional support.
